Celebrate Agatha Christie’s 120th Birthday At Rocco Forte’s Brown’s Hotel
London – This year marks the 120th anniversary of celebrated crime writer Agatha Christie’s birth. To celebrate Rocco Forte’s Brown’s Hotel is offering a special ‘Agatha Christie Afternoon Tea’ in its award-winning English Tea Room from 12-19 September.
There is nowhere more appropriate than Brown’s Hotel to pay homage to the ‘Queen of Crime’, as it is believed Agatha Christie was inspired to write the infamous ‘At Bertram’s Hotel’ after her regular visits to the hotel.
Inspired by two of the world’s most famous fictional detectives – Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, the English Tea Room’s ‘Agatha Christie Afternoon Tea’ includes themed cakes served on traditional tea stands such as:
'At Bertram’s Hotel’ seed cupcake
‘Death on the Nile’ coffee boat cake
‘The Clocks’ macaroon
‘The Red Signal’ raspberry blood cream
‘Evil under the Sun’ lemon tartlet
Plain and fruit scones, served with clotted cream, strawberry jam and even honey, which
was one of Miss Marple’s favourites
A selection of succulent finger sandwiches
Fabien Ecuvillon, Head Pastry Chef, was excited to be able to create a series of Agatha Christie inspired cakes to honour his favourite author. Knowing that Miss Marple favoured seed cakes in ‘At Bertram’s Hotel’, Fabien adapted the recipe to incorporate these ingredients into The English Tea Rooms’ famed cup cakes.
Miss Marple also makes reference to her love of coffee cake, so this made the natural base for the ‘Death on the Nile’ cake which will be boat shaped and Brown’s Hotel’s macaroons created the perfect base on which to make reference to ‘The Clocks’ novel.
The tea costs £50 per person and will include a copy of ‘Agatha Christie, An Autobiography’, signed by Mathew Prichard, Agatha Christie’s grandson.
To further mark the occasion, Brown’s Hotel will also host a special literary tea on 19 September with John Curran, author of Agatha Christie’s Secret Notebooks’. Written with the encouragement of the Agatha Christie Estate, John was given access to 73 handwritten private notebooks and his book lifts the lid on her remarkable legacy.
John will give an illustrated talk about his book and answer any questions. The literary tea start at 4pm, will also include a signed copy of his book and costs £65 per person.
‘It’s remarkable that 120 years after she was born, there is still a huge affection for Agatha Christie and the stories she created’ comments Christie’s grandson, Mathew Prichard. ‘I am very pleased that Brown’s Hotel has chosen to mark the occasion of her birthday week with a special Agatha Christie Afternoon Tea’.
Of this special afternoon tea, Stuart Johnson, General Manager says: 'Agatha Christie, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple have been a large part of my life and one that has added excitement and suspense to us all over the years. We are delighted to honour Agatha Christie in this way and only wish that we could have welcomed her back to Brown's Hotel to experience it'.
Afternoon Tea in The English Tea Room is served between 3pm and 6pm Monday to Friday and 1pm to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday.
