As winter approaches, there’s no better way to warm up than with a glass of mulled wine. Known in Germany as Glühwein or ‘glow wine’, this warming brew is a staple at any festive market or après-ski bar. Mix up Villa Kennedy’s take on this traditional tipple in just moments with the following recipe and savour its seasonal aroma along the way.

Ingredients: (makes four glasses)

1 litre of dry red wine*

1 sliced orange

1 orange, juiced

7 cloves

2 cinnamon sticks

2 cardamom capsules

1 star anise

50g sugar

Crack the cardamom capsules and place them inside a teabag or net with the cloves, star anise and cinnamon.

Boil the red wine with the tea bag inside it, before adding the sliced orange and the orange juice to the wine. Allow the wine to simmer.

Add sugar to taste (or honey if you prefer), allow to cool slightly and serve in a traditional spiced wine glass.

*For best effect, select a red wine with few tannins and ensure it was not stored in an oak barrel as this can negatively affect the flavour of mulled wine.
