Sicily and Puglia: celebrating our southern Italian resorts
mercredi 5 août 2020
Our two resorts, Verdura Resort and Masseria Torre Maizza, are unique amongst our European collection. Verdura Resort, set on Sicily’s south-western coast near the Baroque town of Sciacca, is a vast, atmospheric estate that really offers a taste of island living. Masseria Torre Maizza, set between Bari and Brindisi on the Apulian coast, is more boutique, offering an authentic insight into this desirable and unspoiled region’s culture, tradition and gastronomy. We profile our Italian resorts side-by-side, to give our guests a better idea of what makes each so special.
A warm welcome
Verdura Resort comprises 230 hectares of fragrant orchards, olive groves, Championship golf courses and a private beach. Modern, minimalist and eco-friendly, its rooms, suites and villas blend subtly into the landscape, all offering sweeping countryside and seascape vistas. Despite its state-of-the-art feel, history is just down the road: for those craving a culture fix, the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Agrigento and Selinunte are but a short drive away.
Nestled in rolling hills, the 16th century walled farmhouse of Masseria Torre Maizza has been beautifully rejuvenated and extended, yet retains elements of its original construction. Within its whitewashed walls, you’ll find stylish rooms, suites and a private wing decorated with local stone, marble and pottery, and its crowning glory, the Torre suite, set high in the ancient tower. This more intimate retreat is surrounded by olive and citrus trees, a beach club and golf course, with cultural sites such as Matera and the trulli of Alberobello within easy reach.
Both properties draw on local ingredients to create dishes typical of each region, with menus by Fulvio Pierangelini. Verdura Resort’s many bars and restaurants include the fine-dining Zagara, traditional cuisine at Granita Bar and beachside eatery Amare. Guests can expect to feast on regional classics such as arancini and caponata, accompanied by plenty of produce grown on-site in the resort’s organic garden.
Meanwhile, Masseria Torre Maizza’s boutique restaurants, set in the elegant vaulted outbuildings, serve up impressive Apulian cuisine featuring plenty of fresh seafood, local cheeses and orecchiette.
A range of sporting activities
Masseria Torre Maizza’s beach club is the perfect place for swimming and sunbathing, while countryside trails offer scenic horse riding and cycling routes. In addition, a nine-hole golf course is the place to perfect your swing.
Guests can also tee off at Verdura Resort, during exclusive golf classes led by PGA professionals on two Kyle Phillips-designed Championship courses. There are also celebrity-run swimming, tennis and karate academies for both children and adults, while the resort’s coastal location really comes to the fore with the opportunity to go scuba-diving or enjoy invigorating al fresco yoga.
Wellness is a priority
Verdura Resort is home to the Rocco Forte flagship Sicilian spa, set around a serene courtyard and comprising single and double treatment rooms, outdoor thalassotherapy pools, an indoor pool, steam room and saunas, a high-tech fitness studio and a Spa Bar overlooking the mountains. Treatments feature aromatic botanicals grown on-site, while a range of targeting wellness programmes are available.
The Torre Maizza Spa offers a more intimate space. In addition to its indoor fitness centre and colonnaded open-air pool, outdoor fitness, yoga and spa treatments offer guests a chance to reconnect with nature.
Perfect for families and couples
Both resorts are suitable for children, with our innovative R Kids programmes offering younger guests a packed timetable of events, sports and activities, while families can pick up complimentary bicycles to explore the grounds and surrounding areas. Alternatively, families can explore Verdura Resort’s sprawling surrounds in a golf buggy.
Those seeking a romantic escape might prefer the serenity of Masseria Torre Maizza’s suites with their private terraces and plunge pools, however, Verdura Resort’s exquisite Verdura Villas exude an air of exclusivity and intimacy, situated as they are away from the main body of the resort.
Guest Relations teams at both resorts will be delighted to arrange couples’ experiences ranging from two-person spa rituals and starlit private dining evenings to helicopter or hot-air balloon tours. With sandy beaches, cerulean waters, fragrant foliage and clear, sunny skies, both Puglia and Sicily are unforgettable.
