Exhibitions at Wiels
Between 2nd January and 28nd April 2019
WIELS is the center of contemporary art in Brussels, housed in a magnificent building of the former Wielmans-Ceuppens brewery. It defines itself as an "international laboratory for the creation and diffusion of contemporary art". With no permanent, owned collection the WIELS develops, throughout the year, three types of temporary activities: exhibitions, residencies of artists and activities related to education and meditation.
Hotel Amigo is proud to include WIELS among its official partners, to offer its clients exhibitions, activities and workshops of renowned contemporary art.
Benoît Platéus « One Inch Off » - 2nd January until 28th April 2019 This exhibition devoted to Benoît Platéus (b. 1972 in Liège; lives and works in Brussels) is the first to look back at the artist’s work from his earliest photographs to his most recent paintings. Taking a non-linear approach, it includes several previously unseen works and sheds light on the concerns that recur in the artist’s practice despite his use of highly diverse media and techniques.
Ellen Gallagher with Edgar Cleijne « Liquid Intelligence » - 2nd January until 28th April 2019
Ellen Gallagher is one of the most remarkable artists working today. In her work she bridges the gap between organic iconographies based on microbiological forms from oceanography, and racialized icons and symbols. She reinterprets both everyday images and black idols from pop culture as she wrangles with American history and culture. With her poetic and playful vocabulary, she explores North American stories and tropes that are also highly topical in current European debates on decolonization, underpinning an ecological consciousness of human existence. Gallagher develops surrealistic iconographies that depict the mythical worlds of Afrofuturism with the legacy of the artist Sun Ra, of subsea life forms and of the 'Black Atlantic' and the Middle Passage, the slave route across the Atlantic Ocean.

Theodoor Van Loon «A Caravaggist painter between Rome and Brussels » - 10th October until 13th January 2019
Theodoor van Loon was one of the first painters from the Southern Netherlands to be deeply influenced by the art of Caravaggio. Like his contemporary Rubens, Van Loon developed a powerful, original style and throughout the whole of his career he remains marked by the Italian masters.
Beyond Klimt "New horizons in Central Europe 1914 - 1938" - 21st September and 20th January 2019 The end of WWI and the Austro-Hungarian Empire also meant the revival of major developments in the art world. Political and economic shifts led to artistic migrations, new ideas and perspectives and new artistic networks sprang up all over the place. Artists met up in arts centres and international associations and used magazines to communicate across political borders. They believed their artistic identity was more important than their nationality. This exhibition is your chance to take a look at the Central European territories in full transition through the eyes of Gustav Klimt, Josef Capek, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, László Moholy-Nagy and 75 other artists.

Salon du Chocolat
Between 22nd and 24th February
For the 6th year in a row, the Salon du Chocolat returns to Brussels from 22 to 24 February 2019.
This year’s theme will be Naturalness along with “Every flavour comes from nature”.
“Flavour” because it is one of the most basic criteria when choosing a bar or a chocolate. There are many varieties: dark, milk, white, blond … and now ruby. The diversity of flavours is endless:
from one variety of cocoa to another, from one region to another and according to the art of working the paste.
“Nature” because “the cocoa bean is” – according to Alexander Van Humboldt – “a phenomenon that Nature has never repeated; at no other time has Nature concentrated such a wealth of valuable nourishment into such a small space as in the cocoa bean”. Today, everything natural, authentic and sustainable has become a major concern for consumers.
Book with us and let our concierges give you some insights about this great and Belgian event!
