OFF-SITE EXPERIENCES

Tivoli with Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este

Perched high upon a hill, the town of Tivoli has been a renowned summer retreat for centuries, notably popular amongst Ancient Romans and Renaissance aristocrats owing to its mild climate. Today, it hosts two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, each offering its own unique glimpse into history. Step back in time with our expert guide and discover those magnificent landmarks.Your first stop is Villa Adriana (Hadrian’s Villa), an exceptional complex of classic buildings, erected between 118 and 138 AD on the orders of Roman Emperor Hadrian, who sought a retreat from which to escape everyday life. Spanning more than a square kilometre, the Villa remains to this day the largest and most extravagant holiday home ever built.Catch a glimpse of grandeur past as you wander through the ruins of thermal baths, temples, palaces and theatres. Next, move onto Villa d’Este, one of the most enchanting estates of the late Renaissance and commissioned in 1550 by Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, son of Alfonso I d’Este and Lucrezia Borgia. The villa itself is a wonderful example of no-expenses-spared historic architecture, but it’s for the sheer multitude of sparkling waterscapes and breath-taking waterfalls that this site is most known.

A visit to the Garden of Ninfa

Set out on a short, scenic ride from Rome to discover one of Europe’s most beautiful green spaces, the Garden of Ninfa. A Natural Monument of the Lazio Region, this vast botanical garden owes its name to the Roman temple which preceded it at the same site, dedicated to ancient Greek water deities. Home to thousands of species of plants both native and exotic, a bubbling brook full of brown trout, ruins re-roofed by climbing roses and landscaped flower beds set around reflective pools, it’s a peaceful, paradisiacal oasis. With endless revisions and additions added over the centuries, a wander through Ninfa is a walk through history: in addition to ancient ruins, spot the fish ponds and ornamental fountains created by Cardinal Nicolò III Caetani’s in the 16 th century, the holm oaks and beeches of Gelasio Caetani’s 1920s romantic garden and several restored buildings harking back to the Middle Ages – breath-taking.

A day trip to Bolsena Lake

Enjoy a chauffeured day trip to Lake Bolsena and drink in incredible views of Europe’s largest volcanic lake. Surrounded by picturesque towns including the eponymous Bolsena, magnificent structures such as the Capodimonte fortress and with several small islands to explore, there’s plenty to see and do around this sparkling crater. Once you’ve taken in your chosen sights in and around the area, cool down with a dip in the lake itself, known for its clear, pure waters and popular amongst swimmers and lovers of water sports.
