Birth of a Nation. Italian Art from the Postwar to 1968

A mesmerising journey through art, politics and society in the shape of work by artists such as Renato Guttuso, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Mario Schifano, Mario Merz and Michelangelo Pistoletto explores and reflects on the clashes, the changes and the new trends in art in Italy from the end of World War II to the protest years.
Calcio Storico Fiorentino
Piazza Santa Croce
During June, three games of calcio storico Fiorentino take place in Piazza Santa Croce. A game with roots dating back to the Greeks and Romans, it is a mix of soccer and rugby. In honor of a historic game that took place in 1530, today’s players in the four participating teams (representing the four quarters of Florence) wear Renaissance costumes. Each match is preceded by a lively procession through the centre of the city, accompanied by music and flag-waving.

Palazzo Strozzi will be hosting a major exhibition devoted to the work of Marina Abramović, one of the most celebrated and controversial personalities in the world of contemporary art, best-known for using her own body as a means of expression. The event will take the shape of an exceptional retrospective, bringing together over 100 works ranging from the 1970s to the present day – from the most famous works that marked her career and a new live execution of her celebrated performances, to lesser-known works dating back to her early years.

Fortezza da Basso

This is the world’s most important platform for men’s clothing and accessory collections and for launching new projects in men’s fashion. Created in 1972 Pitti Uomo is held in Florence twice a year, in January and June. Based on a series of fairs in the Fortezza da Basso, each edition of the show attracts about 20,000 key buyers from Italy, Germany, Japan, Spain, UK, France, USA, China and many more. The exhibition features approximately 700 exhibitors, over 850 collections and close to 120 fashion-related events.
