Traditional clothes, including a dirndl for the women and lederhosen for men, is a fun way to uphold the festival’s traditions.
The long standing Munich tradition of Oktoberfest began with the marriage of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810. In honour of the newlyweds, a horse race was held in a meadow outside of Munich, today's Theresienwiese.
Since then, the royal wedding has been celebrated in the same spot every year. Now aligned with Oktoberfest, the occasion is marked with beer tents, live music and fairground rides. Another great tradition, upheld since 1950, is the official tapping in the Schottenhamel festival hall with the famous words “O'zapft is”, announcing “It is tapped”.
Just remember, ladies, the positioning of the bow holds a special significance. Placed to the right hand side, it signifies that you are married, a bow on the left means you’re single, while a bow at the middle of your back is for widows and children.
Get ready for your close-up, against a gingerbread heart photo wall in our hotel lobby. It’s part of the special decorations which include a pyramid of beer mugs, decorated with ears of corn and colourful dried flowers as the tradition dictates.
