The History of Oktoberfest

The long standing Munich tradition of Oktoberfest began with the marriage of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810. In honour of the newlyweds, a horse race was held in a meadow outside of Munich, today's Theresienwiese. 

Since then, the royal wedding has been celebrated in the same spot every year. Now aligned with Oktoberfest, the occasion is marked with beer tents, live music and fairground rides. Another great tradition, upheld since 1950, is the official tapping in the Schottenhamel festival hall with the famous words “O'zapft is”, announcing “It is tapped”.

The Dirndl Bow

Just remember, ladies, the positioning of the bow holds a special significance. Placed to the right hand side, it signifies that you are married, a bow on the left means you’re single, while a bow at the middle of your back is for widows and children.

Oktoberfest Bedtime Snack

Get ready for your close-up, against a gingerbread heart photo wall in our hotel lobby. It’s part of the special decorations which include a pyramid of beer mugs, decorated with ears of corn and colourful dried flowers as the tradition dictates.

During the festival we’re serving a special Betthupferl menu from 6pm to 1am, treating our guests to a choice of sweet and savoury delicacies. Whether currywurst or Kaiserschmarrn, let us spoil you with culinary delights after a fantastic day at the festival and then look forward to a restful night's sleep in our elegant rooms and suites.

The perfect Oktoberfest look, which can also be seen on the front office staff of The Charles Hotel can be purchased from this years Oktoberfest partner of The Charles Hotel, Inntaler Trachtenwelt. The shop directly at the Marienplatz, which only opened in May 2024, offers an extensive selection of traditional costume fashion for women, men and children. From classic traditional costumes to modern interpretations, you will find a variety of styles and designs to suit every taste and occasion. With a bit of luck, you will be personally advised by designer and managing director Angelina Kees who is regularly present at the new store. In addition to the products from various high-quality manufacturers, there are also exclusive collections designed by her.
