Two of the Mediterranean’s most important archaeological parks are located on the western side of Sicily. Agrigento is home to the Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage-protected site. Nearby is Selinunte, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the region.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Trapani’s Stagnone Nature Reserve, one of the island’s few remaining wetlands and a WWF protected area since 1995. Picturesque windmills dominate the lagoons, with salt pans dotted by mountains of the region’s famous sea salt. This all-day excursion continues on a colourful road towards the charming Medieval town of Erice, to the top of its namesake mountain overlooking Trapani harbour.
Palermo’s distinct architecture combines Byzantine, Islamic and Latin styles, a monument to the cultures who have made their mark on the island. Nine of these structures in Palermo and nearby Monreale and Cefalù are celebrated by UNESCO as World Heritage sites. Follow the Arab-Norman itinerary and explore one or all of these 12th century sites.
Tumbling down a scenic hillside along Sicily’s southern coastline, Sciacca is a 15 minute drive from Verdura Resort. Explore its history city centre with the Sicilian Association’s Museo Diffuso dei 5 sensi programme: book guided tours, visit artisan workshops and see how the town’s famous Carnival floats, coral jewellery and ceramics are made. Pause at a café on Piazza Angelo Scandaliato and drink in the views of the sea and the fishing port below.
Caltabellotta is a historic hill-town with panoramic views of Agrigento to Mount Etna. Expect beautiful monuments, churches and caves built into the cliff-face. Thirty minutes away is Burgio, a small hillside town of
medieval origins with a rich history. Visit the town’s monuments and churches, the bell Foundry and the Ceramics Museum.
A half hour drive from the Valley of the Temple is Sicily’s most exciting new art space, Farm Cultural Park, an art project which transformed the historic centre of Favara into a contemporary cultural hub. Known for thought-provoking art exhibitions by local and international artists, Farm brings visitors and locals together with cultural events, talks, screenings, workshops and performances.
