The Best of Europe - Summer Experiences in Sicily
Those plotting their great green escape this summer can look to Sicily’s south coast, where they’ll find Verdura Resort among olive trees, orange groves and white-sand beaches. The hotel is the perfect base to explore Sicily’s fascinating diversity, from its Scala dei Turchi, an unusual rock formation, to sixteenth-century ramparts and Norman churches in the city centre, charming Sicilian villages and the beautiful Mediterranean sea. We’ve put together some of the best day trips to enjoy this summer, including spectacular trekking routes that will lead you to unearth the region’s historical sites, like a WW2 air raid shelter.
SCALA DEI TURCHI BY YACHT
The spectacular Scala dei Turchi is an unusual rock formation that winds up Sicily’s idyllic coastline like a staircase, hence its meaning; stairs of the Turks. Legend has it that Saracen pirates would drop anchor in the waters hidden by the cliffs before raiding the local villages, using the staircase to climb the hillside and provide an advantageous element of surprise. What better way to admire Sicily’s iconic white cliffs than from the luxury of your own yacht, with striking views of the coastline from the azure waters, including Torre Salsa, a WWF nature reserve which stretches along the shoreline.
Reserve one day of your holiday for exploring Sciacca’s historic treasures, including a collection of striking sixteenth-century ramparts and Norman churches in the city centre. Scale the city’s heights to reach the ruined Norman castle or visit one of Italy’s oldest bell foundries and be sure to include a pit-stop at the charming town square, Piazza Angelo Scandaliato, with views down to the sea and fishing port beyond. After admiring the scenery, indulge in a spot of homeware shopping by indulging in Sciacca’s famous local ceramics and handicrafts before exploring the two enchanting medieval villages of Caltabellotta and Burgio, both blessed with breathtaking views across Sicily.
Historians will adore this fascinating day trip spent exploring Sicily’s abundance of ancient sites. Your guided tour begins at Verdura Resort, where you’ll be taken a short drive away to visit the Valle dei Templi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to the fifth-century BC Temples of Concordia and Juno. Prepare to marvel at some of the best-preserved Doric architecture in the world, before continuing to the spectacular Selinunte Archaeological Park, one of Europe’s largest archaeological parks. Here, you’ll discover the history of a sixth-century BC Greek trade centre and see the reconstructed Temple of Hera.
Verdura Resort is located in a spectacular stretch of 230 hectares of sun-kissed Mediterranean coastline and countryside, dotted with winding olive groves and orange and lemon trees creating a sublime backdrop for exploring. We’ve created a series of spectacular trekking routes, unearthing the region’s historical sites including a WW2 air raid shelter, as well as a chance to explore our prized organic, zero-mileage vegetable garden recognised by the Società Agricola. Our fitness team will advise the perfect route for you and provide plenty of hydration, as well as Rocco Forte Nourish healthy snacks.
