SHRIMP HUNTING IN THE NORTH SEA WITH PETIT BATEAU
Used in many typical Belgian dishes, the Belgian grey shrimp is often described as the “queen of seafood” and caught daily by local fisherman in the North Sea. Hotel Amigo, a Rocco Forte Hotel in Brussels, is taking guests on a daytrip to the Belgian Coast to hunt for the grey shrimp in their very own iconic Petit Bateau yellow raincoat.
The grey shrimp, a treasure of the North Sea, is fished in the traditional way in Belgium, on horseback or on a shrimp fishing boat. A typical way of eating the shrimp is to stuff them in tomatoes with lemon juice and mayonnaise, also known as tomaat garnaal, or in the very tasty shrimp croquette.
Guests of Hotel Amigo will be able to spend half the day on board of the “Cragnon” shrimping boat leaving from the port of Ostende. Dressed in the iconic Petit Bateau yellow raincoat for protection from the vagaries of the sea, they will learn how traditional Flemish fishermen have been practising otter trawling for years, while the ship’s crew will teach them the tricks of the trade. Guests will be sorting, rinsing and boiling the shrimp they catch. After disembarking, they will be able to take their part of the catch back to the hotel. Hotel Amigo’s chefs will then prepare the grey shrimp for guests to taste their own “queen of seafood”. This memorable experience is ideal for a familial trip during the summer months.
