INSTAGRAM BECOMES ART AT THE BALMORAL
October 2017, The Balmoral, a Rocco Forte hotel in Edinburgh, is celebrating Scotland’s most talented Instagram photographers with its first Instagram exhibition that opens this month.
To mark 115 years as one of Scotland’s most photographed landmarks, the hotel - that celebrates its birthday on 15th October - invited 15 leading Instagram photographers to exhibit images of Edinburgh’s architectural gems.
14 of these photographers were invited by the hotel to exhibit their work, with the 15th exhibitor winning a coveted slot via the hotel’s #BalmoralGallery Instagram competition.
From the celebrated and acclaimed to the secret and obscure, the hotel’s walls in The Gallery - a mezzanine space overlooking the hotel’s lobby - will showcase the Instagram images until the end of November. From the Melville Monument on St Andrew’s Square peaking through spring cherry blossom to Kristy Ashton’s striking silhouette on The Cowgate, all the images offer a different perspective on Scotland’s capital. Submissions - taken using either a SLR or a smartphone – have been previously shared on their Instagram feed for their followers to enjoy. “As Edinburgh’s Grande Dame what better way to mark our birthday than to celebrate the architectural beauty of the city?,” says General Manager, Richard Cooke. “Edinburgh is a very instagenic city as the thousands of submissions we received to our competition proved.
From defining shapes on the city skyline to much-loved buildings, hidden closes and architectural details, this exhibition not only celebrates Edinburgh but also highlights the validity of Instagram as an art form and the talent that lies behind the mobile phones.” Launching alongside the Insta Exhibition is The Balmoral Instagram City Tour. Run by popular Instagrammer @IanGBlack, the dedicated walking tour of Edinburgh is open to locals and residents alike taking them to the best vantage points in the city from which to take the iconic Instagram shots of the Edinburgh.
The Balmoral’s Insta Exhibition opens on 5th October 2017.
