THE BALMORAL REVEALS ITS ENCHANTING NEW LOOK
October 2017, The Balmoral, a Rocco Forte hotel in Edinburgh, has unveiled the final installment of its multimillion pound refurbishment. Following a refresh of its castle view rooms, the hotel’s J.K. Rowling Suite has undergone an upgrade courtesy of Olga Polizzi, Rocco Forte Hotels’ Director of Building & Design, and sister to Sir Rocco Forte.
The Balmoral is a grand railway hotel located at Edinburgh’s most prestigious address, No. 1 Princes Street. A landmark in the city, it has been a home to illustrious figures for over a century; and it was in room 552 of the hotel where J.K. Rowling completed the Harry Potter series.
As Rocco Forte Hotels marks its 20th year, it’s fitting that the hotel which signifies the beginning of Sir Rocco’s portfolio in 1997 has undergone a significant restyle in which the J.K. Rowling Suite has played a central role.
Authenticity is at the heart of Rocco Forte Hotels and for Olga Polizzi it has been fundamental to the “enlivening of some of the best rooms in the hotel” with subtle checks and tartans adding a sense of place. Working with a colour palette of blues, greens, greys and purples that evoke Scotland’s watery expanses and heather-filled moors, many of the rooms’ key features also reference the landscape with wallpaper featuring trees and foliage and tables sporting bronze branch-like legs.
Whilst the castle view rooms now celebrate the hills and glens of Scotland with a sylvan theme, the new-look J.K. Rowling suite - with its signature owl door knocker - showcases Olga Polizzi’s whimsical touch and a talent for mixing old with new.
Entering through a purple door, guests are welcomed into a star-filled entrance and led to a light-filled living room with views over Calton Hill. The suite evokes the Scottish woodlands offset by touches of orange and a carefully curated mix of antiques - sourced by Olga Polizzi herself in antique fairs and shops - and bespoke modern pieces. A vintage typewriter, meanwhile, takes pride of place on the suite’s desk celebrating its link to the world famous author.
The hotel has, in fact, played host to other notable literary figures over the years including Muriel Spark and Wilfred Owen. It is appropriate, therefore, that the 37 castle facing refurbished bedrooms all look onto The Scott Monument – built to commemorate Scottish author, Sir Walter Scott, and the largest monument to a writer in the world.
The renovated rooms and suites are integral to Rocco Forte Hotels’ ongoing dedication to its suite offering. Rocco Forte Hotels has unveiled The Rocco Forte Suite Experience, a new concept across each of the 11 hotels, giving guests an indulgent stay from the moment of arrival to departure.

Notes To Editors:
Olga Polizzi’s Chosen Suppliers
The sylvan theme of the hotel’s refurbishment is evident as soon as you step into the J.K. Rowling Suite. Olga Polizzi has selected ‘Wood Grain’ wallpaper from Cole & Sons to add texture to the walls, whilst a sense of fun has been injected into the bedroom with ‘Woods & Stars’, again from Cole & Sons. Carved mirrors and side tables also play on the woodland references. The contemporary feel of the rooms is offset with a mix of antique pieces whilst bright pops of colour are injected with the likes of James Hare’s ‘Carnival Stripe’ fabric curtains. Handmade beds by Glencraft, suppliers to the Queen at Balmoral Castle, have been chosen for all of the refurbished rooms whilst many of the fabrics and cushions have been sourced from the Scottish companies The Isle Mill and Timorous Beasties.
Many hotels claim to have landmarks on their doorstep, few can say their doorstep is a landmark. The Balmoral is a grand railway hotel located at Edinburgh's most prestigious address, No 1 Princes Street. The Balmoral offers 188 opulent suites and contemporary rooms. Excellent cuisine is guaranteed in the Michelin-starred Number One restaurant or the informal Hadrian’s Brasserie. Afternoon Tea is served in the iconic Palm Court whilst the hotel boasts a collection of over 400 Scottish whiskies at Scotch. Expertly blended cocktails are shaken and stirred to perfection at The Balmoral Bar and signature Forte Organics are available at The Balmoral Spa.
