KOCHERLBALL: A CELEBRATION OF MUNICH TRADITION IN THE HEART OF THE CITY

Enjoy a traditional Munich experience set in the beautiful English Garden, with plentiful food, drinks and dancing.

In the 19th century, every Sunday of the summer as many as 5000 of Munich’s servants met at 5am at the Chinesischer Turm in the English Garden to enjoy a few hours of joyous dancing before starting their working day. Guests of The Charles Hotel can follow in their footsteps with the Kocherlball Experience providing guests with the opportunity to revel in the morning’s unique festivities like a true Munich local.

In 1989 the city of Munich revived the Kocherlball tradition and ever since, this annual event has been held every third or fourth Sunday of July, providing the perfect setting to dance the waltz, polka, Zwiefacher and the Münchner Française. In its early years the Kocherlball was still a secret ‘insider’s tip’ among folk dance aficionados, however during the second decade of its modern revival it has become an event which draws crowds of up to 15,000. Guests need not be keen dancers – many revelers come to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and plentiful food and beer stalls that fill the Garden.

Guests of The Charles Hotel will begin the experience on the Saturday, perfecting their dance moves with a dance crash course in the ballroom of the hotel. To become totally immersed in the event in true traditional fashion, guests can borrow an individual Kocherlball costume. On the Saturday evening, the Bavarian dinner in Sophia’s Restaurant & Bar will be a feast to be enjoyed, with traditional Bavarian specialties to set the mood for the Kocherlball the following day. The next morning, guests awake at 4:30 am, and after enjoying a small delicious breakfast in their room, a limousine awaits them in front of the hotel, to take them swiftly to the English Garden. A picnic basket full of treats, candlesticks and blankets will start the ultimate Kocherlball experience, and guests can choose to partake in the merry dancing or relax and soak up the unique atmosphere while enjoying the Bavarian delicacies.

Kocherlball package from 22 July to 24 July starting at €1,990 for two upon availability. Book at +49-89-544555 1430 or www.roccofortehotels.com/hotels-and-resorts/the-charleshotel/
