Brown’s has welcomed an array of distinguished guests since it opened as London’s first hotel in 1837 – amongst them the great British patriot, Sir Winston Churchill, who lived in Mayfair.

“I am easily satisfied with the very best,” Churchill famously said, perhaps ensconced at the bar at Brown’s, fine whisky in hand. He was not the first of his family to frequent Brown’s premises: his American grandmother stayed at the hotel in 1871, making Brown’s something of a family tradition. With its refined oak panelling, roaring fires and genteel, club-like ambience, Brown’s probably suited the Prime Minister down to a tee.

Churchill is a revered figure at the hotel, his pictures, biographies and novels can be found throughout its rooms and suites. Brown’s is commemorating 2020 as a milestone year for Churchill, due to a number of historical anniversaries, including:

  • The 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) - 9th May
  • The 80th anniversary of Churchill’s appointment as Prime Minster - 10th May
  • The 80th anniversary of Churchill’s first speech as Prime Minster – ‘Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat’, - 13th May
  • The 80th anniversary of Churchill’s renowned wartime speech – ‘Never was so much owed by so many to so few’ - 20th August
