As winter approaches, there’s no better way to warm up than with a glass of mulled wine. Known in Germany as Glühwein or ‘glow wine’, this warming brew is a staple at any festive market or après-ski bar. Mix up Villa Kennedy’s take on this traditional tipple in just moments with the following recipe and savour its seasonal aroma along the way.
Ingredients: (makes four glasses)
- 1 litre of dry red wine*
- 1 sliced orange
- 1 orange, juiced
- 7 cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 cardamom capsules
- 1 star anise
- 50g sugar
- Crack the cardamom capsules and place them inside a teabag or net with the cloves, star anise and cinnamon.
- Boil the red wine with the tea bag inside it, before adding the sliced orange and the orange juice to the wine. Allow the wine to simmer.
- Add sugar to taste (or honey if you prefer), allow to cool slightly and serve in a traditional spiced wine glass.
*For best effect, select a red wine with few tannins and ensure it was not stored in an oak barrel as this can negatively affect the flavour of mulled wine.
