A Cinematic Christmas in the Eternal City

A Cinematic Christmas in the Eternal City

This festive season, Hotel de la Ville and legendary film studio, Cinecittà, join together to celebrate Roma Set Eterno – a tribute to the Eternal City’s enduring role as cinema’s most captivating muse.

From the moment you arrive, festive décor evokes the elegance of a glittering red carpet, while seasonal menus and thoughtful surprises offer small moments that become precious memories. Step outside, and the city itself unfolds like a cinematic journey, each piazza, cobbled street, and illuminated dome a scene.

Cinecittà Studios

Since opening its doors in 1937, Cinecittà has earned a reputation as the birthplace of Italian film. The studios are famous for producing some of cinema’s greatest masterpieces, such as Roman Holiday and La Dolce Vita, as well as the Oscar-winning Conclave, starring Ralph Fiennes. These films have championed and immortalised the city’s light, landmarks and beauty, showing Rome as a star in its own right. Guests can visit Cinecittà Studios, where more than 3,000 films have been produced – including 47 Oscar-winning titles – or enjoy a private tour. Both will reveal more about the storytelling and technical wizardry behind the films. Explore props, costumes, sound and set design seen on screen, or go behind-the-scenes to legendary sets that are usually off-limits to the public on a private tour arranged by our concierge.

The city is ready for its close-up

Strolling around the city, it soon becomes apparent: Rome’s streets are a stage. At Hotel de la Ville, our enviable location next to the Spanish Steps puts guests at the spot where Audrey Hepburn stood in Roman Holiday and the mastermind in The Talented Mr Ripley covered up his murderous plot.

Arriving at Circus Maximus, the scene for a free concert on New Year’s Eve, listen out for thundering hooves as you picture the Ben Hur chariot scenes – filmed on an 18-acre set outside Rome. Wrap up warm and wander the boulevards that line the Tiber, imagining pensive scenes from The Great Beauty, Paolo Sorrentino’s love letter to Rome.

The city also played a key role in the 2015 Bond film, Spectre, with a high-speed car chase through narrow streets via the Vatican before Bond’s Aston Martin splashes down into the river.

Hotel de la Ville as a film set

Experience Rome as both city and cinematic masterpiece when you step into Hotel de la Ville. Discover a place where craftsmanship, creativity, and tradition intertwine through festive displays and seasonal menus.

Like a scene from a film, the hotel’s interiors reveal a quiet moment over artfully plated spaghetti at Café Ginori, a close-up of the cocktail menu, Once Upon a Time at Cielo Bar, before a cinematic shot over rooftops glowing at dusk, domes bathed in winter sunlight, and streets alive with festive excitement.

The scene is set for a magical Christmas in Rome, inspired by the golden age of Italian cinema. Get ready for your close-up at Hotel de la Ville this festive season.
