A Liberty-Era Journey Through Rome

A Liberty-Era Journey Through Rome

At the turn of the twentieth century, Italy gave rise to Stile Liberty, its interpretation of Art Nouveau, where sinuous lines and botanical motifs reshaped the visual landscape. Today, that same spirit can be rediscovered in the Eternal City, at Hotel de la Ville where the experience of staying in a suite elevates travel from sightseeing to soulful discovery.

Through Suites & Beyond, each stay is shaped by thoughtful curation, from a perfectly timed aperitivo to a handwritten note.

Above the Spanish Steps, the hotel has long been a meeting point for curious minds. Travellers once arrived to sketch ruins, debate ideas or linger over the chiaroscuro of Caravaggio. Now, inspired by Palazzo Bonaparte’s exhibition Mucha: A Triumph of Beauty and Seduction, we have collaborated with The Maptique to offer a bespoke Stile Liberty itinerary for our guests.

A City Shaped by Stile Liberty

Stepping onto the streets of Rome, your curated adventure begins at Galleria Sciarra, a hidden courtyard celebrated for its frescoes, where allegories of civic pride and the evolving image of the modern woman are etched into the walls. From there, it’s on to Villa Torlonia, whose enchanted Casina delle Civette showcases owls, peacocks and swans captured in stained glass creations by the studio of master artisan Cesare Picchiarini.

In Quartiere Coppedè, fantasy and architectural craft collide: eccentric turrets, gleaming mosaics and sculptured iron converge around the Fountain of the Frogs, inviting contemplation of whimsy and wonder. Not far away in the Prati district, Villino Cagiati stands as a quintessential expression of Liberty style with its organic motifs and sculptural façades, while Villino Ximenes, former studio of sculptor Ettore Ximenes, reveals a more personal resonance of Rome’s artistic imagination.

The Alphonse Mucha Exhibition

For those wishing to delve deeper into the Art Nouveau movement, Palazzo Bonaparte offers a rare moment of immersion. Here, works by Czech visionary Alphonse Mucha – posters, panels and rare studies – share space with Botticelli’s Venus beneath a luminous arch, drawing a poetic parallel between Renaissance beauty and Art Nouveau’s reverence for the feminine form. Signature pieces such as Gismonda, The Seasons and The Stars are presented alongside video installations that bring the era’s artistic energy to life.

The Story Continues at Hotel de la Ville

Returning to the warmth of our hotel, your suite becomes a place of refuge. On entering your room, a handwritten note welcomes you home, while an aperitivo awaits as the perfect accompaniment to reflect on the artistic discoveries of the day. At the writing desk, a beautifully bound art book lies on the coffee table, perhaps opened to pages on Mucha or Stile Liberty design, inviting quiet contemplation as day dissolves into night.

Evenings here begin with a From Rome to Palermo cocktail, paying tribute to the movement’s reach across Italy. When it’s time to retire, you might discover a personalised monogrammed pillowcase as a thoughtful turn-down surprise. Through each carefully considered detail, you are surrounded by culture, from the city’s gems to the refined moments in your suite.

Reserve your suite and discover the meaning of thoughtful travel through Suites & Beyond. Each individually designed suite reveals a story; yours begins when you book a stay with us.
