Rome at Christmas on a Magical e-Tuk Tour

Rome at Christmas on a Magical e-Tuk Tour

Rome is a city transformed during the winter season. Its streets and piazzas glow with twinkling lights, seen from a new perspective on a planet-friendly tour of the city, exclusively available through our partnership with Etuk Tours Rome.

At Hotel de Russie, we share the excitement of the season at every turn. Sparkling décor is illuminated by soft candlelight, and warm seasonal menus offer comfort from within. Families celebrate together with us at a special brunch on Christmas Day while New Year’s Eve brings a joyful gala dinner under the stars in our glittering Secret Garden.

An eco-conscious way to explore

For a unique and sustainable way to explore Rome’s Christmas lights, our concierge can arrange an e-tuk tuk to take you on a private journey through the city’s most iconic landmarks. This quiet, low-impact mode of travel opens up the city’s streets in a considered way.

The tour begins at the Spanish Steps and winds past Via Condotti’s elegant boutiques before pausing at Piazza Navona, where the Christmas market buzzes with energy and fairylights laced over wooden stalls. Time is set aside to browse stands laden with handcrafted toys, pretty ornaments and sweet treats – from spiced biscuits to candied fruits – perfect for gifting or sampling as you explore. Arriving at St Peter’s Square, take a moment to admire the majestic 27-metre Norway spruce, and observe the intricate details of the nativity scene – the magi adoring the child, a shepherdess offering gifts, and an ethereal angel.

"There’s something about Rome in December and January – the way the lights shimmer on cobblestones, the scent of roasted chestnuts in the air, and the silence that falls over the piazzas at dusk. Guiding guests through this city in winter time feels like sharing a secret. It’s not just beautiful – it’s intimate, timeless, and quietly unforgettable."

Christmas and Epiphany in the Eternal City

Festivities officially begin in Rome on 8th December with L'Immacolata, the feast of the immaculate conception. The day begins with the fire department placing a new wreath of daisies on the top of the statue near the Spanish Steps – later visited by the Pope.

For those spending Christmas itself in Rome, few experiences are as moving as attending Midnight Mass at St Peter’s Basilica or witnessing the Urbi et Orbi blessing on Christmas Day – moments that capture the spiritual heart of the city.

The holidays continue on until 6th January with a national holiday for Epiphany. In Rome, it’s combined with the folklore legend of La Befana, the kindly witch who brings sweets to well-behaved children. Crowds gather for the lively Viva la Befana parade, a procession of music and dancing that begins at Via della Conciliazione and leads to St Peter’s Square – a fitting finale to the season. Rome’s winter light, tradition, and mindful enjoyment. Whether exploring by foot, by e-tuk tuk, or from the warmth of Hotel de Russie, it’s a chance to experience the Eternal City at its most radiant.

Join us at Hotel de Russie for an earth-friendly Christmas in Rome – an unforgettable celebration filled with spirituality, connection and the enduring magic of the Eternal City.
