Traditional Clothing

Part of the joy of Oktoberfest lies in the opportunity to dress the part. Traditional garments - dirndls for women and lederhosen for men - are a cherished element of the celebrations. Inspired by the clothing once worn by rural communities across Bavaria, these outfits have become a proud symbol of regional heritage and folk culture. Originally designed as practical workwear, lederhosen were crafted from durable leather such as cowhide or deer skin, while dirndls were typically made from breathable fabrics like cotton, linen or wool. Today, many Munich boutiques still offer beautifully made, authentic garments.

The History of Oktoberfest

A long standing Munich tradition, the origins of Oktoberfest date back to the year 1810. To honour the marriage of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, a horse race was held in a meadow outside of Munich, otherwise known today as Theresienwiese. Over the past two centuries, the celebration has evolved into the world’s most famous folk festival, complete with beer tents, live music and fairground rides. Since 1950, the festivities have officially begun with the ceremonial tapping of the first barrel in the Schottenhamel tent, when the mayor declares the iconic words, “O’zapft is” - “It is tapped.”

The Dirndl Bow

There is more to the dirndl than its elegant silhouette. Traditionally, the position of the apron bow subtly conveys the wearer’s relationship status to potential admirers. This discreet form of communication dates back to the 19th century and remains part of Oktoberfest folklore today. Tied on the left-hand side, the bow indicates that the wearer is single, while a bow on the right signals that she is married or in a relationship. When tied at the centre back, it generally denotes widows or young girls.
