The History of Oktoberfest

A long standing Munich tradition, the origins of Oktoberfest date back to the year 1810. To honour the marriage of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, a horse race was held in a meadow outside of Munich, otherwise known today as Theresienwiese.

For the past 200 years, the occasion has been celebrated in the same location, and is now marked with beer tents, live music and fairground rides. Another great tradition, upheld since 1950, is the official tapping of the first barrel in the Schottenhamel festival hall, as the mayor calls out the famous words “O’zapft is”, translating to “It is tapped”.

The Dirndl Bow

Just remember, ladies, that the positioning of the bow holds a special significance. Placed to the right hand side, it signifies that you are married, a bow on the left means that you are single, whilst a bow at the middle of your back is reserved for widows and children.
