Why visit Munich in Spring?

As spring arrives, the Bavarian capital bursts into colour. It is the moment when the city sheds its winter layers and returning sunlight brings a renewed energy to daily life. With an abundance of leafy parks and open green spaces, there is every reason to spend longer days outdoors again - admiring cherry blossoms in the English Garden, laying out a picnic on the rolling lawns of Olympiapark, or celebrating the warmer weather with friends beneath the chestnut trees of a traditional beer garden. And for those planning a family holiday, Munich offers the rare combination of culture, nature and space to explore together.

Things to do in Munich during the Spring

From cherished Easter traditions and family festivals to the beautiful landscapes just beyond the city, spring in Munich is a season of renewal and celebration. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to uncover new corners, here’s how to make the most of your stay with The Charles Hotel as your base.

Our Favourite Spring Experiences

Wochenmarkt in der Au

Every Wednesday and Saturday, farmers and artisans gather at Mariahilfplatz in the Au district, setting up stalls filled with fresh produce, fragrant herbs, and flowers. Shop for white asparagus, peppery radishes, farmhouse cheeses from Alpine dairies and freshly baked bread, alongside Bavarian honey. A wonderful flavour of the region in the heart of this charming neighbourhood.

Mini golf & cherry blossom at Olympiapark

As temperatures rise, Olympiapark becomes a lively outdoor playground. A relaxed round of mini golf is perfect for families visiting with children, surrounded by fresh greenery and views towards the Olympic Tower. In April, the park’s cherry trees burst into delicate pink bloom, transforming the landscape into one of Munich’s most photogenic scenes and inviting peaceful lakeside walks beneath drifting petals.

Biergartens

From the first warm days of May, locals gather in Munich’s beloved beer gardens, including the Chinesischer Turm in the English Garden, Augustiner-Keller, and the bustling Viktualienmarkt. Order a chilled Maß of Bavarian beer and a traditional Brotzeit of pretzels, cheeses and cold cuts, and settle in at the long communal tables. A simple yet joyful ritual, and one of the many pleasures of the high season in Munich.

Isar walks & ice cream stops

On sunny afternoons, head for the banks of the Isar River to make the most of the returning warmth. With budding trees overhead and cyclists, sunbathers and picnickers by the water, the atmosphere can feel almost Mediterranean. Along the way, stop at a gelateria, such as Ballabeni, True & 12, or Der Verrückte Eismacher, for seasonal flavours like strawberry, rhubarb or elderflower.

Botanical Garden in bloom

Spring is one of the most rewarding times to visit the Botanical Garden near Nymphenburg Palace. Magnolias, tulips and cherry blossoms fill the gardens with colour, while the historic greenhouses provide an exotic contrast. Afterwards, continue through the parkland of Schloss Nymphenburg, where quiet canals and tree-lined paths make for a blissfully unhurried afternoon.

Osterzopf & Easter traditions

During Easter, bakeries display freshly baked Osterzopf, a soft braided bread often topped with almonds or pearl sugar. Delightfully sweet yet also light and fluffy, it is traditionally served for Easter breakfast and enjoyed fresh from the oven with butter and jam.

Frühlingsfest

Held from mid-April to early May on the Theresienwiese, the Frühlingsfest is fondly described as the “little sister of Oktoberfest.” Visitors can still expect traditional beer tents, Bavarian music, fairground rides and a joyful atmosphere, but on a more intimate scale.

Maibaum

On the 1st May, villages and city districts across Bavaria assemble a decorated Maibaum (Maypole), adorned with ribbons and carved symbols representing local trades and traditions. A particularly playful custom surrounds the ceremony: neighbouring villages may attempt to secretly steal another community’s maypole before it is officially raised. If successful, it must be “ransomed” back, typically with beer and a festive feast.

Day Trips and Outdoor Adventures

Lake Chiemsee

Around 60 minutes away, Lake Chiemsee - often called the “Bavarian Sea” - makes for an ideal spring escape. Ferries cross the lake to Herreninsel, home to King Ludwig II’s magnificent Herrenchiemsee Palace, or to the charming, car-free island of Fraueninsel. With Alpine views across the water and fresh lakeside air, it’s an idyllic destination for a day beyond the city.

Strawberry fields

By late May and early June, the strawberry harvest begins in the surrounding countryside. Farms such as Hofreiter BeerenCafé and Erdbeer-Lang open their fields for visitors to pick their own fruit. Few experiences capture the spirit of the season more simply than filling a basket with sun-ripened strawberries and enjoying them fresh from the field — an outing that’s especially popular with families.

Hiking in the Bavarian foothills

With many popular trails within an hour's journey of Munich, it’s an ideal time to explore the Bavarian Alps and foothills. Tegernsee offers panoramic lake views and gentle mountain walks, while Schliersee combines alpine scenery with charming lakeside villages. Further south, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Zugspitze region reveal dramatic peaks and flowering alpine meadows as the snow begins to melt, with spring’s temperate climate making it the optimal time for hiking.
