Blending exquisite scenery, sensational cuisine and an extraordinary cultural landscape, Puglia is a honeymooner’s paradise. We sat down with wedding planner Giusy d'Ambrosio to find out why Puglia is the ideal destination for an unforgettable honeymoon, and what makes Masseria Torre Maizza the perfect romantic escape.
What would you say makes Puglia such an extraordinary honeymoon destination?
“Puglia is an ideal destination for a honeymoon because it combines culture, nature, excellent food and a good climate. It gives couples time to relax and regenerate after the excitement, tension and tiredness that follows any wedding celebration.”
How do you make a honeymoon memorable?
“It is the destination that makes each honeymoon unique. The authenticity of the places and the warmth of the local people here in Puglia make the difference. Plan the essentials, but also allow yourselves to be guided by curiosity. This is a land to be discovered.”
What are some of the most photogenic locations for couples to visit?
“In Puglia there are many enchanting places, such as the white sandy beach of Punta Prosciutto or the cliffs of Polignano a mare. There are also unexpected locations such as the bauxite quarry in Otranto, with its vivid colours, or the Grotta Azzurra – the ‘Blue Grotto’ – in Castro, Salento.”
Where would you recommend for a romantic dinner with a view?
“One of the most famous scenic views in Puglia is that of Grotta Palazzese and the recently-established Terrazze Monachile, right in the centre of Lama Monachile, in Polignano a mare—one of the most photographed beaches in the world, enclosed between two spurs of rock. Then we’d recommend Dish in Ostuni, with an enchanting view of the historic centre; Le Lampare al Fortino and its terrace on the small port of Trani; and L'Aragosta da Cò, overlooking the waters of Porto Cesareo beach.”
Are there any special trips that couples can take in Puglia?
“Absolutely! I’d recommend a tour in a vintage car in Valle d'Itria with PAC Puglia Auto Classica. Alternatively, the gulet excursions along the coast between Monopoli and Polignano are especially romantic.”
What are some of the more unusual activities that couples can enjoy together in the region?
“There are plenty to choose from. I’d suggest bluefin tuna fishing and snorkelling, hot air balloon flights, cooking and mozzarella making classes, pizzica dance classes and guided cycling.”
Are there any particular spa treatments you would recommend for couples?
“As a treatment for couples on their honeymoon we’d recommend “Il rituale corpo all'olio di oliva” (The body ritual with olive oil), lasting approx. 120 min. It’s a gentle body treatment with Apulian herbs and olive oil, with a strong nourishing and revitalizing effect. After a relaxing foot bath, a scrub treatment using olive leaves and sea salt is applied, which makes the skin smooth and velvety. As you would expect, the body will be entirely brushed with the Apulian olive oil and a compress will also be used, to make sure the skin absorbs its nourishing properties. After that, acupressure on the face and a refreshing scalp massage will follow. The treatment concludes with a body massage using Irene Forte skincare products, based on Mediterranean-sourced ingredients. Sunset massages can also be arranged in the garden of the guests’ accommodation.”
