Long regarded as one of the finest courses in not only Italy but all of Europe, Verdura East Links – along with its sister course Verdura Shore – shot to new heights after original architect Kyle Phillips returned to remodel both layouts in 2019.

Played along the dramatic terrain of Sicily’s southern coast, Verdura East Links provides a thorough examination of every skill in a player’s arsenal. Strategy is the key to scoring well around this par-72 layout without falling foul of craftily placed bunkers – and sprawling greens demand that golfers must pay careful attention to each putt.

Verdura East Links never strays far from the Mediterranean Sea, but the highlight is perhaps the three-hole stretch between the sixth and eighth, where you’ll need to hold your nerve to avoid sending your ball to the bottom of the bay.

Be sure to aim at the left-side bunkers for the perfect angle to approach the green. Take enough club to clear the bunker guarding the green for an early birdie chance.

The safe shot is to the centre of the green to avoid deep bunkers in front and behind, or you can land slightly short and right for a pitch or putt onto the putting surface.

A risk-reward short par four which is lined by a burn down the left. You can go for distance with a driver or accuracy with an iron – but don’t be too greedy early in your round.

The same burn lines this fairway, with bunkers left and right. A straight drive short of the burn is essential – from there, club selection is key to holding a very fast green.

An inviting tee shot to a wide fairway leads to an elevated green where the Mediterranean sits on the horizon. The short second shot is a great opportunity to hit it close, but if you can’t, be sure to favour the left side.

Another short par four, with the fairway split by the burn leading to the sea. Position your tee shot left of the fairway bunker to leave a short approach to the green.

Playing back uphill, the seventh is protected by three large bunkers. Don’t be short – keep the plentiful space long and right in mind to eliminate all of the danger.

This generous par five is a great opportunity for birdie – find the fairway off the tee and then lay up, or go for the green in two if you can!

Take aim at the left side fairway bunker to find the centre. Your line for the approach shot is left of the bunker short of the green, which slopes off to each side.

As one of the shortest par four holes at Verdura, an iron off the tee is the typical play. The shared green adds another challenge as its pin positions can be deceiving.

Aim for the centre of the fairway. Missing the rectangular green left isn’t a disaster but miss it right and you’ll be lucky to find the bunker instead of water.

The 12th is similar in design to the fifth, but here favouring the right of the fairway takes the water and deep rough out of play before you approach the elevated green.

Don’t be fooled by the short distance, gusts from the sea can make club selection confusing, but long is better than short. Getting it up and down from the bunkers short of the undulating green is no mean feat.

Alongside Verdura’s stunning suites, find the fairway for a short approach into a challenging green. It’s protected in front by two bunkers so an extra club is advised.

Aim for the right side of the fairway and gain as much distance as possible off the tee. A lay-up can bring the two left bunkers into play, so don’t be afraid to take more club.

Aim ten yards right of the bunker on the left; the fairway’s natural contours on this line will run your tee shot well down and leave a wedge to a wide, generous green.

This sweeping right-to-left par five provides a good birdie opportunity. You may be able to reach the green in two, or a simple lay-up can offer a short approach. However, tricky pin positions can complicate the pitch shot.

Favour the left side off the tee for the easiest approach to a green protected by four tricky bunkers. Take note of the pin position on the large green before you select your club for the approach.
