10 attractions within 10 minutes from Hotel Astoria

Culture

Located in the heart of this historic city, Hotel Astoria offers easy access to St Petersburg’s leading attractions. Whether you’re looking to discover iconic cathedrals, illustrious galleries or spectacular landmark buildings, you’ll find all this and more within a short walk of Hotel Astoria.

1. St Isaac’s Cathedral

Located just across the street from Hotel Astoria, St Isaac’s Cathedral is one of the most important churches in Russia. Built between 1818 and 1858 by architect Auguste Montferrand, its elaborate dome dominates the St Petersburg skyline.

2. Manege Central Exhibition Hall

Formerly the home of the Horse Guards regiment, Manege Central Exhibition Hall is now one of the country’s leading venues for contemporary art. Offering exhibitions, workshops, lectures and film screenings, you could lose an entire day here.

3. The Bronze Horseman

A monument to Peter the Great, The Bronze Horseman depicts Peter on his horse, and is named after a poem by Alexander Pushkin. Positioned looking out towards the Neva River, this celebrated statue is just a short walk from Hotel Astoria.

4. The Admiralty

Continue walking along the embankment and you’ll soon reach The Admiralty. Famous for its soaring spire, which pierces the city skyline, this iconic building still serves as the principle headquarters of the Russian Navy.

5. Palace Square

The buzzing heart of the city, the enormous Palace Square is an icon of imperial opulence. Take some time to stroll around and take in the sights, from street musicians to roller skaters.

6. Alexander Column

Right at the centre of Palace Square sits Alexander Column, named for Alexander I and commemorating Russia’s victory against Napoleon in 1812. One of the most recognisable monuments in St Petersburg, the towering column is topped with an angel.

7. The State Hermitage Museum

One of the largest museums in the world, The Hermitage holds over 3 million items in its collection. With this in mind, it’s best to allocate at least half a day for your visit—and don’t expect to see more than a fraction of its treasures in one trip. A large part of the collection is housed in the Winter Palace, the grand green, white and gold building on Palace Square.

8. New Holland Island

Within easy walking distance of Hotel Astoria, New Holland Island is a cultural and creative hub in the heart of the city. Home to art exhibitions, concerts and plenty of outdoor activities (including an ice rink in the winter months), it’s particularly popular with families.

9. Marina Gisich Gallery

Set on the banks of the Moika River, Marina Gisich Gallery is one of the leading contemporary art institutions in the city. With Rocco Forte Hotels you’ll gain special access to the exclusive “inner sanctum”, a gallery within the gallery that’s only open by special request.

10. Mariinsky Theatre

From Marina Gisich Gallery we recommend taking a boat along the river to Mariinsky Theatre. Having hosted all the great names in Russian ballet and opera, this opulent theatre has been at the centre of Russian culture for more than two centuries. After enjoying an unforgettable performance, take a short stroll back along the Moika River to Hotel Astoria.
