The Charles Hotel, Munich: Fascinating facts you may not know

Culture

A sparkling landmark in leafy Lenbachgärten, The Charles Hotel is bursting with character and full of fascinating details. If you’re looking to explore Bavaria from this bright, modern base, read on for some surprising facts to take advantage of during your stay.

Art admirers will love…

Famous for his realistic portraits of high-profile persons, Franz Seraph Lenbach’s works are treasured worldwide, most housed in national collections across the UK and US. However, the Forte family acquired 17 original paintings—the world’s largest private collection—ahead of the hotel’s opening in 2007 and decided to share them with guests here at The Charles Hotel, in the city where Lenbach spent much of his life.

Tip: After admiring these priceless pieces, stroll over to the Lenbachhaus museum, nearby. Here, in the painter’s former villa, you’ll find the largest collection of art by the ‘Blue Rider’ Expressionists.

Dog owners will be delighted to know…

The Charles Hotel is not only the perfect place to bring your four-pawed family members, but actually has its own dog. Hotel Manager Yvonne Lauble’s Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Maxi, can often be seen, tail wagging, following her mistress as she goes about her daily duties.

Tip: After we welcome your pet with a special treat and bed, don’t hesitate to enquire for a pet-friendly itinerary. Many Munich attractions, such as Bavaria Film Studios, welcome animals.

A photographer’s paradise…

Thanks to our prime position, views from The Charles Hotel are both sweeping and striking. Through our windows, guests can spot landmarks including the old and new Justice Palaces, Munich Town Hall, Alter Peter, the Olympic Park (Stadium and Tower), the Old Botanical Garden and more.

Tip: To take advantage of the very best vistas, opt for our Presidential 2-bedroom Suite. Its private terrace gazes out over the green of the Botanical Gardens, Munich’s skyline and the snow-capped Alps on the horizon.

Nature lovers, take note…

Not only is The Charles Hotel located next to the Old Botanical Garden, but its décor and even dining was inspired by this beautiful flora and fauna. You’ll find serene shades of green, floral patterns and fresh flowers throughout the hotel, and can enjoy Sophia’s botanical menu amidst 5m-tall fig trees, carefully tended indoors.

Tip: For a real taste of the Old Botanical Garden, try signature cocktail ‘Sophia’, infused with fragrant thyme.

Well-connected, in more ways than one…

Whatever you might yearn to do, see, or experience, The Charles Hotel can arrange it. With partnerships including Sixt, BMW, Moët Hennessey, Hofbräu, Baccarat, Nymphenburg Porcelain, the Bavarian State Opera and more, whether you want to rent a car, delve into the process of porcelain production or enjoy a landmark performance from VIP seats, our Concierge will be delighted to assist.

Tip: If you’re visiting the workshops of the Nymphenburg porcelain manufactory, take a closer look at the tiles in your bathroom—each is a Nymphenburg piece depicting Adam and Eve, as well as the signature of architect, Christoph Sattler.

A real record-breaker…

The Charles Hotel is home to some of the largest standard rooms in Munich, measuring a minimum of 40sqm, so you’ve plenty of space to relax and recuperate after a day about the town. Additionally, The Charles Spa houses one of the largest hotel pools in town at 15x8m, so swimmers can enjoy full laps in the serenity of this colonnaded sanctuary before winding down on chaise lounges or with a spa treatment.

Tip: To luxuriate in one of the biggest suites in Germany, choose our Monforte Royal Suite, measuring a generous 200sqm, or for a large entourage, allow us to connect it with the Presidential Suite for a total of 345sqm.
