Munich's Magical Christmas Market

Rocco Forte Hotels

As Munich’s famous Christmas markets begin to arrive, the city is lit with constellations of lights and lanterns, and dotted with colourful huts and stalls from Marienplatz to Theresienwiese. At the heart of the festive tapestry and just a stone’s throw from Munich’s premier festive attractions is The Charles Hotel. Here, we profile the most mesmerising markets within walking distance.

Marienplatz Christmas Market

Locally known as Christkindlmarkt, Marienplatz’ Christmas market epitomises Munich’s festive spirit. Here, the bright stalls are stacked high with Christmas souvenirs, from hand-blown glass ornaments to hand-carved wooden toys. As a dramatic backdrop, the neogothic spires of Munich’s famous Neues Rathaus are illuminated by the market’s towering central spruce. For a glittering bird’s eye view, ascend St. Peter’s Church Tower after sunset.

Medieval Christmas Market

One of Munich’s most beloved Christmas traditions is Wittelsbacherplatz’ Medieval market. It specialises in the enchantment: spiced rum is served in clay flagons alongside impressive drinking horns. On the weekends, the fairground bursts to life with costumed bards, jesters and jugglers contributing to the market’s historic atmosphere.

The Tollwood Winter Festival

Occupying the same hallowed grounds as world-famous Oktoberfest, the Winter Festival is part Christmas market and part worldwide celebration. Street food vendors from across the globe rub shoulders with local Glühwein producers, while an international collaboration of musical, artistic and theatrical performances cater to every taste.

Residenz Christmas Village

Modelled on a quaint alpine village, the Residenz market occupies the courtyard of Bavaria’s former royal palace. Championing authenticity, the market’s organisers personally select each of the artisans to guarantee quality wares. Here, you’ll find old-fashioned Bavarian ornaments, traditional local music and even extraordinary puppet shows.

Pink Christmas

Organised by Munich’s LGBTQ+ community, Pink Christmas is an atmospheric, inclusive celebration of advent. Located in Stephansplatz, the market glows magenta with lanterns, twinkling lights and coloured trees, and features charming pagodas selling hot cocktails and sweet delicacies. There’s plenty to entertain, from the sounds of the resident DJ and a variety of stage performances to sipping on something sparkling at the Prosecco Bar, with all proceeds going to a good cause.
