Christian: Music Enthusiast

“You can take a trip all over the world just by listening to music.”

Christian has been part of Hotel Amigo’s story since 1986. In nearly four decades, he’s witnessed the city transform around him, but if there’s one thing that hasn't changed, it’s his passion for creating unforgettable guest experiences, and his deep love for Brussels’ ever-evolving music scene.

My favourites:

A Global influence

Brussels’ music scene is truly international — open to all sounds and styles, from African rhythms and American jazz to British pop and even music from as far away as New Zealand. Here, you can take a trip all over the world just by listening to music.

Festival Fever

Guests visiting between June and August can experience an incredible line-up of festivals, each with its own character.

Just outside Brussels, Tomorrowland in Antwerp is one of the biggest electronic music festivals in the world, attracting DJs like David Guetta, Martin Garrix, and Swedish House Mafia. Many of our guests stay with us before or after the festival — it’s less than an hour’s drive away and a great way to extend your visit.

Rock Werchter, held each July in the small town of Werchter, is a four-day tribute to everything loud and energetic and is really one of Europe’s greatest festivals, while Les Francofolies de Spa transforms the town of Spa into a festival filled with French-speaking artists from across the world.

Back in Brussels, Couleur Café brings Osseghem Park, at the foot of the Atomium, to life with vibrant performances from both Belgian and international artists. Meanwhile, at Tour & Taxis, one of Brussels’ most exciting venues, you’ll find exhibitions and cultural events all year round — including the Amazing Asia Festival in August, with two open-air stages, live performances, street food, and sunshine.

Jazz concert live at Bar Magritte in Brussels, Hotel Amigo

A legacy of jazz

Jazz has a special place in Brussels’ heart, and I always recommend two clubs to guests — both just a short walk from Hotel Amigo.

The Music Village offers a return to the golden age of international jazz, hosting more than 300 concerts a year from Belgian and international artists. It’s intimate, authentic, and perfect for an evening of live music. A few minutes away, Toots Jazz Club — named after the great Belgian jazz musician Toots Thielemans — is a newer venue with themed nights throughout the week. It’s lively, modern, and a fantastic spot to hear something different.

And of course, there’s our very own Bar Magritte. On selected weekends we host Mix & Melody evenings, where guests can enjoy live music and cocktails in our art deco-inspired bar. I always enjoy working those nights because I can hear the music from the hotel lobby.

Classical notes

I enjoy all the great classical composers, though Tchaikovsky’s music has always moved me the most.

For guests who share that passion, Bozar is a must. Designed by Victor Horta and open since 1936, it’s home to symphonies, piano recitals, and world-class performances. Another favourite concert hall of mine is Flagey, a beautiful Art Deco building beside the Ixelles ponds. It hosts the Brussels Philharmonic and some of the world’s best emerging musicians — and the acoustics are just incredible.

During the quieter months, the Queen Elisabeth Competition takes centre stage. Held annually at Bozar, it’s one of the world’s most prestigious classical competitions, alternating between piano, violin, voice, and cello each year. It’s a wonderful way to experience world-class talent in a historic setting.

We also love helping guests make their experience extra special. Through our contacts at La Monnaie, the city’s main opera house, we can often arrange VIP tickets even when performances are sold out — and sometimes even a backstage visit or a tour of the costume department. It’s those moments that make a visit truly unforgettable.
