Fascination for Fossils
All kids aged from three to 10 love dinosaurs. Tristan, the huge skeleton of a T-Rex, is back in Berlin’s Museum of Natural History. They’re planning a reconstruction of the museum and a new garden with a scientific dinosaur display outdoors. I highly recommend a special guided tour of the museum, especially during holiday time, and they have one that’s just for kids which we can help our guests book.
The Power of Communication
If you have a child who’s curious about communication, and they want to see something new and essential, go to the world’s oldest postal museum. I'm more of a letter-writing girl so I love going to the Museum of Communication and seeing how things were done in the past. In 1920s Germany, for example, they had the ‘Rohrpost’ where they sent letters through an underground network. Children today can use mobile phones and computers but they may be surprised to discover how you had to dial an old phone.
Get Your Game Face On
The Computer Game Museum is really a popular choice among children who can see the history of computers from the beginning, the first games and how it all started. It’s also fun for parents who can reminisce on the games they had as a child.
Prenzlauer Berg – the “district of beautiful mothers”
In the Prenzlauer Berg district, it’s jokingly referred to as ‘Pregnant Hill’ by the Berliners because there are more kids than adults, and the cafes are the most family-friendly in Berlin. The neighbourhood has lots of playgrounds which are especially good for smaller kindergarten-aged kids. It’s also full of lovely shops for gifts, souvenirs and beautiful wooden toys.
Active Kids in Berlin’s Green Spaces
Berlin is an incredibly green city with more than 2,500 parks. We like to send our little guests to the popular Café am Neuen See and biergarten, a beautiful spot in the middle of the Tiergarten Park where you can get ice cream and hire a boat on the small lake.
At the peaceful square of Helmholtzplatz, go to Café Kiezkind for a ‘Kinder Cappuccino’' and a Berlin Splitterbrötchen, or sweet roll, while your kids unleash their energy in the indoor and outdoor playgrounds.
We also love the Dragon Playground in the family-friendly Samariter quarter, and the Fairy Tail Playground to the south-west. For older kids, MountMitte presents a series of challenging high rope trails next to the Nordbahnhof station in the heart of Berlin.
All Aboard: Exploring Berlin by Boat
Not many people know that Berlin has more bridges than Venice. Teenagers will love the bridge tour by boat on the River Spree as it’s a roundtrip where you see (almost) all the main attractions in the city centre. It covers six different districts, from the East down to the canal in Kreuzberg. If your teens think they’ve already seen everything in Berlin, this tour will show them another side of the city.
For younger children, the one-hour historical boat tour is the perfect length of time. It starts from Friedrichstraße or Nikolaiviertel, only 10 minutes walking distance from our hotel. You can enjoy food and drink on the boat, it’s open-air and it’s a great way to see the city while entertaining your children.
