At Masseria Torre Maizza, concierges Antonino Pace and Pasquale Bernardo share a passion for Puglia’s vibrant food scene. Pasquale, a proud native of Bari, and Antonino, hailing from Turin but captivated by Puglia’s flavours, guide guests to the most authentic and enticing dining experiences in the region.
“We always say, it’s always easy to find good food in Puglia. Our culture is so focused on food, it’s a lifestyle.”
Antonino and Pasquale’s Top Five:
Inspired by the bounty of the Apulian Coast
One of our first recommendations would have to be Lido Bambù, our very own beach club here at Masseria Torre Maizza. It’s a beautiful location overlooking the sea, serving the freshest seafood and local produce. The menu has been created by Fulvio Pierangelini, the godfather of Italian cooking, and whether you choose pizza, pasta, fish, or something lighter like a salad, every dish is bursting with flavour. Even the ice cream!
A new local favourite
It may be a new opening, but La Destina is already one of our favourite restaurants. It’s in the historic town of Fasano and managed by a local Apulian lady who has created an incredibly welcoming and informal ambience. That’s something we always like to recommend, because ‘five-star’ gourmet restaurants can be found everywhere in the world, especially where most of our guests are from. For us, something authentic is always at the top of our list, and it’s what makes exploring Puglia so special.
Dining by the water
Located in the port town of Savelletri, Osteria del Porto excels in simple yet delicious food and wonderful service. Whenever we arrive, it feels like we’re at home – the owner, Maria, is so warm and attentive. Overlooking the water, you can enjoy a beautiful selection of local fish and meat – all the best flavours of Puglia. It’s a quiet spot perfect for relaxed and romantic dining.
A taste of the mountains
We have to also mention the choice of local butcher’s shops, or ‘macelleria’ in Italian, where guests can select their preferred cut of meat, have it grilled then and there, and enjoy it in an adjoining dining spot. In Puglia, a lot of our produce is locally grown, and because of the nearby mountains and fertile terrain, we enjoy really high-quality and flavourful meat. We don’t have to import many products at all. You can find authentic butchers everywhere in Puglia, but some we would recommend near Bari include Fornello Pronto and Braceria Signorile.
Bari’s best street food
Some of Puglia’s best food is made for eating on the go. Local street food markets are incredibly popular here, and from Monday to Saturday each week, you can find a different market in every town in Puglia. One of our favourite foods from the markets is the Panino Col Polpo – a very traditional sandwich from Bari, made with fresh octopus, vegetables, tomatoes and stracciatella. You can find it pretty much everywhere, and it’s really delicious.
