Unmissable Puglia with Antonino Pace and Pasquale Bernardo

Born in Bari, Pasquale spent over 15 years working abroad before the pull of his home region drew him back, just as Puglia gained international recognition. Meanwhile, Antonino brings a wealth of international experience from his time in France, Switzerland, and Rome. Together, they welcome guests at Masseria Torre Maizza with a deep local knowledge and passion for Puglia’s beauty.

Puglia is a region that rewards curiosity. Its diverse landscapes – from rocky beaches to historic towns – invite exploration.

A glimpse of true Puglia

For guests who are short on time, our first suggestion is that they must come back! To help our guests maximise their time though, we would start with dividing Puglia into three main areas to be explored. Firstly, we have Northern Puglia, which is perhaps less popular with tourists, but still incredibly beautiful. Then we have Bari, which isn’t too far from our Masseria, and finally we have Salento in the south.

To help our guests see all of Puglia’s wonderful sights during their stay, we would also recommend that they hire a car, or alternatively we can organise a driver for them. This way, they can combine multiple sights and towns in a single day. Having a car can also be a more authentic experience since guests can explore at their own pace and feel more like a local. Of course, we are happy to share directions, and driving here is surprisingly easy. Masseria Torre Maizza is in a strategic position, with most of Puglia’s beautiful locations just a 30-minute drive away. For example, we would suggest taking a scenic drive to Ostuni, known as the White City, to roam through the winding streets of its enchanting old town, before admiring the view of the city from Corso Vittorio Emmanuel II.

Another unmissable sight is Polignano a Mare, an enchanting town perched upon limestone cliffs and a quintessential Puglian experience. Guests can stroll through the narrow streets, enjoying a gelato, and take in the view of the coast. We would also suggest a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Alberobello, a captivating small town not too far from the hotel, which is home to more than 1,000 trulli, whitewashed stone huts with conical roofs dating back to the 14th century. Wandering through this historical town is like stepping back in time.

Embracing the true Italian way

The beauty of Puglia is that it remains an authentic destination. While many associate Italy with cities like Rome or Florence, Puglia showcases the country’s deeper, everyday beauty, that stretches from North to South. That’s why Italy is home to the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Puglia is also incredibly safe, and its warm, welcoming locals are a big part of the experience for our guests. Just last Sunday in Lecce, we saw this firsthand. An American couple at the next table couldn’t understand the server’s recommendations, yet they trusted her suggestions and had an amazing, family-style meal. It was a real testament to the genuine hospitality here, something you rarely find in larger cities like Milan or Florence.

Finding the right itinerary for every guest

Discovery means something different to everyone. For some, it’s a leisurely walk, soaking up the atmosphere and picking up tips from locals along the way. For others, it’s about diving deeper into the history and stories that shaped the region. Our goal is to understand what kind of experience our guests are looking for.

If a guest would like to understand more about Puglia’s past, with lots of detail, we would recommend a guided tour. But to really live the Puglian experience, we also recommend that they go beyond the guidebook. They don’t need us to tell them when a cathedral dome was built – they can Google that. Instead, we’ll steer our guests towards the authentic heart of Puglia; this might be a quiet piazza, such as Piazza Plebiscito in the nearby town of Ceglie Messapica, where locals gather to play cards and sip beer – a daily ritual that speaks volumes about the local community. Alternatively, it could be a traditional bar still serving gelato the same way it has for decades, some of our favourites which guests can visit are Bar Turismo in Polignano a Mare, Bar FOD in Cisternino, and Bar da Pasquale in Ostuni. It’s these genuine encounters that make their time here unforgettable.
