History
Bordering Munich’s Old Botanical Garden and shaded by mature oak trees, The Charles was designed as a peaceful urban retreat in the heart of the Bavarian capital, with many of its elegant rooms and suites looking out over the gardens.
The building was designed by Munich-born architect Christoph Sattler of the firm Hilmer, Sattler & Albrecht, whose work also includes Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. Its design, rooted in the timeless elegance of the 1930s, simultaneously recalls the romance of grand 19th-century hotels along the Mediterranean, paying tribute to Munich’s reputation as “Italy’s northernmost city.”
Inside, a thoughtfully curated collection of paintings by the Munich artist Franz von Lenbach - who once lived nearby - adds a sense of place and history. Meanwhile, a botanical influence finds its way into the verdant dining room and terrace at Florio, where guests can enjoy classic Italian cuisine, inspired by the spirit of la dolce vita.
