Edinburgh Castle is one of the only castles in the world that’s on a volcano, in the middle of a city, and with 360-degree views. It’s the jewel in our crown.
With its dramatic skyline, centuries-old landmarks and thriving arts scene, Edinburgh is shaped by history and alive with culture. At its heart stands The Balmoral: the city’s most iconic address. Through long-standing relationships, the hotel’s dedicated team opens doors to extraordinary private experiences – each one curated to create lasting memories for guests in truly remarkable settings.
Edinburgh Castle: The city’s crown jewel
Towering over the city from its volcanic perch, Edinburgh Castle offers unparalleled access for events of historic significance. From early morning private tours to exclusive-use evening takeovers for up to 600 guests, the castle offers impressive flexibility and intimacy.
“Edinburgh Castle is such a unique place,” says Bethany Lawrie, Hospitality and Events Manager at Historic Environment Scotland. “It’s one of the only castles in the world that’s on a volcano, in the middle of a city, and with 360-degree views. It’s the jewel in our crown.”
Thanks to a strong “Team Edinburgh” spirit, the castle’s relationship with The Balmoral is close-knit. “Our goal is to make guests feel like they’ve stepped into something truly unforgettable. You’re walking in the footsteps of royalty, of warriors, of poets - and yet we work hard to make it feel personal,” Bethany adds. “We love seeing guests experience the castle in a completely new way.”
Winton Castle: History as your host
Just 30 minutes from The Balmoral, Winton Castle is a living piece of Scottish history. Described as “intimacy on a grand scale,” Winton offers guests exclusive use of the 15th-century castle and its 2,000-acre organic estate. Seven public rooms with antique furnishings and artworks by Van Dyke and Canaletto set the scene for fireside storytelling and gala dinners.
Outside, guests can enjoy Highland games, clay pigeon shooting or spot Highland calves—Winifrid, Purdy, Chatty and Frieda - who are now part of the welcome committee. And it wouldn’t be Winton without its eccentric host: Sir Francis Ogilvy, who lives at the castle with his family and, on warmer days, can be spotted swimming in the moat.
Winton’s charm lies in its authenticity, character and sense of fun. “Winton may date back to 1480,” says Sales Manager Julie Britee, “but our approach is very modern - sustainability and hospitality are at the heart of everything we do.”
Winton’s long-standing relationship with The Balmoral makes it an effortless extension for incentives or private celebrations. “We share the same high standards and attention to detail, creating unique experiences, tailored to each group,” Julie adds.

The Royal Yacht Britannia: Where stories set sail
Moored in Leith, the Royal Yacht Britannia offers something no other venue can: the chance to dine, toast, and celebrate like royalty aboard a vessel that once carried the British Royal Family across the globe.
Exclusive-use events begin with a red-carpet welcome up the Royal Brow – once reserved for dignitaries. “That moment is always special; you are literally stepping into history and the excitement is palpable”, says Lisa Johnson, Senior Sales and Event Manager.
Guests enjoy a private tour filled with anecdotes passed down from the original crew - many of whom return each May for a reunion. “There’s so much warmth and heritage here,” Lisa adds. “It’s not just a tour. It’s a storytelling experience.”
Dinner is revealed with theatrical flair as the State Dining Room doors open in unison. Menus are personalised down to the guest, even including pre-arranged favourite drinks. And the night can end in true Britannia fashion - with dancing on the Royal Deck, after-dinner drinks, or a traditional Beating Retreat on the concourse below. “Whether you’re two guests or 500, the yacht is yours alone for the evening,” says Lisa. “It’s not just exclusive. It’s transformative.”
