Behind the Courses with Mauro Grieci

As Golf Superintendent at Verdura Resort, Mauro Grieci carries responsibility for 45 holes of golf set against one of the Mediterranean’s most exposed coastlines. When he speaks about the resort, he begins with responsibility rather than aesthetics. 'Verdura Resort' is a high-level golf destination,' he says. 'And to remain there, the standards cannot fluctuate.' For Mauro, course conditioning is not about isolated moments of perfection. It is about consistency, planned long before it is visible.

The estate stretches across 230 hectares, from the shoreline inland, and is shaped daily by forces beyond anyone’s control. Wind influences green speeds and irrigation patterns. The proximity of the Mediterranean brings salt air and the risk of storm surges. The land has faced flooding and erosion. In summer, temperatures have reached 47 degrees, with humidity that tests even resilient turf.

He does not describe these as obstacles. They are part of Verdura’s identity. ‘You work with the elements, not against them,’ he explains. Cultivation programmes, machinery upgrades and irrigation improvements are mapped months in advance. Decisions are made as preparation, not reaction, with the understanding that nature ultimately sets the terms.

Seasonality defines the rhythm of the work. During the winter closure, when the courses are quieter, the most intensive agronomic practices take place. Aeration, construction projects and refinements are carried out away from view. By the time the resort reopens fully in mid-March, what appears effortless has already been built.

Structure underpins that effort. A dedicated team maintains equipment and a substantial cart fleet. Around 4,000 sprinklers manage irrigation across the property, particularly through peak summer demand. Supervisors coordinate greenkeepers course by course, adjusting plans daily around weather and play. As Superintendent, Mauro sits between ownership, external consultants and the on-course teams, ensuring standards are clearly defined and consistently delivered.

He speaks often about clarity. Everyone understands the level required. There is pride in that shared understanding and in the discipline it demands.

For guests, the experience is straightforward: greens that run true, fairways that feel balanced, surfaces that inspire confidence. For Mauro, that simplicity is the outcome of months of considered decisions. ‘High standards,’ he says, ‘are not achieved in a week. They are built over time.’
