On this informative day tour, knowledgeable textiles guides will escort you behind the scenes to meet the highly skilled craftspeople who weave and knit Scottish luxury cashmere and tartans for Chanel, Burberry and other leading fashion houses around the world.  This is a unique opportunity to explore the world of Scottish textiles, which remains nestled away in rural Scotland.

 

THE EXPERIENCE INCLUDES:

Private visit to the meet Kitty Mackenzie, founder Director of the Scottish Textiles Showcase in Edinburgh and tour organiser. Learn about the Harris Tweed story, Scottish wool mills and independent artisan makers around Scotland. 

Drive one hour south of Edinburgh in luxury, chauffeur driven vehicle to the Scottish Borders, the historical epicentre of the Scottish textiles industry; this region is  famous for its lush green rolling hills and river valleys and home of the River Tweed.

Private tour of Lochcarron of Scotland tartan weaving mill in Selkirk.  With a heritage dating back to 1892, Lochcarron is one of Scotland’s leading manufacturers of tartan cloth and has over 500 tartans in stock in the warehouse. 

Journey continues to Hawick, also known as the home of Scottish Cashmere for a private tour of Royal Warrant holder Johnstons of Elgin Cashmere mill. Founded in 1797 this family owned business has passed between just two families, maintaining a reputation for high quality and craftsmanship. Haute couture in the making.  

The Cashmere, Tartan and Tweed Trail starts from £650 for 2 people, including chauffeur driven vehicle and entry fees.  Lunch at Johnstons of Elgin Mill (not included in price).

Bespoke Tours include an opportunity to design handmade kilts, kilted skirts and Highland dress. Guests can also design their own family tartan or tweed (by appointment with the designers).

 

Please note: This tour can only be conducted Monday to Friday. On Saturdays the mill tours are closed so the tour will include a Tartan Table Talk at a tartan mill, a visit to the Johnstons of Elgin shop and visitor centre and a trip to a whisky distillery in Hawick. A visit to Abbotsford house (home of Sir Walter Scott, overlooking the river Tweed and by the beautiful town of Melrose) can also be arranged.

 

Each experience must be booked 72 hours in advance and a 100% cancellation fee policy applies.
